Acne affects millions of people each year. There are many types of acne, but the most common type is called Acne Vulgaris. Mild to moderate types of Acne Vulgaris include whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, and papules. Serious forms of Acne Vulgaris include nodules and cysts.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are pimples that have a white head or tip to them. The whitehead forms on the face when a pore is completely blocked with sebum (oil), cellular material and P. acnes bacteria.

Blackheads

Blackheads are similar to whiteheads, except that the pimple is only partially blocked. The black material is not dirt as some believe, but melanin (pigment of the skin). Blackheads may last a long time on the face, because they take time to drain.

Pustules

Pustules are commonly referred to as zits. They have a white head in the middle and red enflamed skin surrounding it. Pustules are usually infected with bacteria and can also be yellow or green at the head.

Papules

Papules are skin lesions or pimples that do not have a head. They are simply red in color. Be careful with papules, as squeezing them can cause scarring.

Nodules

Nodules are usually referred to as severe forms of Acne Vulgaris. A nodule is a thick lesion that is usually underneath the skins surface. They can cause scarring and be extremely uncomfortable. Many times nodules can take several months to heal. You should never try to pop a nodule. If you notice nodules under your skin, you should seek the advice and treatment from a dermatologist.

Cysts

Cysts are similar to a nodule, but are filled with infected pus. Cysts are usually 5mm or more in size and can sometimes be painful. You should never squeeze a cyst, since you can cause and internal infection. If you notice you have a cyst, you should consult with your dermatologist.br
Acne can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. When someone repeatedly receives acne breakouts, they often wonder what they can do to prevent them from happening again. Unfortunately, many times they are misinformed about acne skin care. In fact, many commonly accepted acne facts are nothing more than myths. It is wise to inform yourself before making decisions about acne skin care. The following are some acne skin care myths which any medical doctor will debunk:

Myth #1: Acne treatments are universal, and what works for one person will work for everyone.

The truth is, everyones natural chemistry and skin are unique. Furthermore, each person lives in a unique environment which will have specific effects on their skin and acne. The truth is, what works as an acne fix for one person may completely fail for someone else. Each person should get personalized advice from a dermatologist. Furthermore, they should be willing to keep trying different things until they find a regimen that works for them.

Myth #2: There is a quick fix for acne.

This is another myth which often proves to be completely false. For people with very severe acne, getting rid of it can be a long-fought war, not a quick battle. Even when medication is very effective, it can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to get initial results. To beat acne, it is necessary to be patient and stick with it, even when treatment doesnt seem to be helping.

Myth #3: You dont need a dermatologists help to beat acne.

Actually, the dermatologist is exactly who you need to beat acne! Some people believe that their own concocted remedies, or over-the-counter treatments are enough to clear up their skin. The fact is, you may need a personalized plan to actually clear up your acne, and only a doctor is qualified enough to recommend this safely. So do yourself a favor, and go see a doctor about it! Youll be glad you did.

Of course, those are just a few of the facts (and uncovered myths) about acne skin care. To get the full story, it is advised that you see a dermatologist and get more personalized recommendations. And of course, once you are prescribed a specific acne regimen, remember to stick with it! Anything worthwhile takes time.br
br
Acne is an inflamed disease of the skin, and it has many causes. One such cause is bacteria that is breeding in the pores of the skin. When the bodys immune system is weak, it becomes allergic to this type of bacteria. Blood cells are attracted to fight the allergy, and the pores become blocked. Oil secretions begin to build up at these pores and provide a breeding ground for even more bacteria. Eventually, pimples form.

When faced with a bacteria causing acne, it is likely that you will begin to panic. Just imagine when you have red bumps that resemble small boils on your face. These red bumps get filledl with a nasty puss caused by the body fighting the infection of the bacteria. What can you do? Well, there are a number of things that you can do to fight the bacteria for acne treatment.

Treatments that kill the bacteria that cause acne included the use of antibiotics like tetracycline, doxycycline and minocyclne. These are to be taken orally. Also topical antibiotics or bactericides like Benzoyl peroxide or erythromycin can help. The bacteria also known as P. acnes, does however become resistant to the antibiotics eventually. However Benzoyl peroxide, an oxidizer, does not seem to generate resistance by the bacteria. While the acne will come back, it is a short term and temporary cure and is applied topically.

Gently exfoliating the skin can also help. This method can be done by using a cloth or a liquid scrub, or by using certain chemicals. Chemical exfoliating substances include salicylic acid and glycolic acid. Both of these agents cause a peeling of the top layer of skin, which prevents a build up of dead skin.

Another over the counter acne treatment is salicylic acid, which softens skin and gets rid of dead skin cells, which in turn unclogs pores. Many face wash products contain this ingredient. Also sulfur contained in many over the counter products works well for many people. Another product is glycolic acid, which is found in anti-aging products as well as acne medicines.

However, natural health practitioners prefer to recommend the use of natural acne treatment. Tea tree oil is gaining in popularity. It kills the bacteria and also reduces redness and inflammation. It works much the same as Benzoyl peroxide but causes less skin irritation. Tee trea oil can be easily found at health food stories.

Acupuncture is used by some and is thought to alleviate hormonal imbalances in the body. Those who use acupuncture also usually suggest lifestyle changes and a change in diet, including cutting back on dairy products.

Light therapy is another natural remedy to fight the bacteria that has many adherents. Many people believe that the bacteria that causes acne insensitive to light in the blue wavelength of the light spectrum. Light therapy means shining blue light onto a patient for fifteen minutes at a time twice a week, usually for four weeks. This treatment can be expenses, running about $150 per treatment. Not all patients have had good results, but some have. Also since light in this wavelength is not harmful to the skin, there are no side effects or after effects.

Some people think that acne is caused by poor hygiene and by eating certain foods. There is no scientific evidence linking diet to acne. But a good diet sure will not hurt in skin repair and damaged tissues.

Good personal hygiene also goes a long way in your acne treatment. Also using makeup that doesnt clog pores helps prevent the spread of bacteria and acne from getting worse.

Any of the above mentioned methods for acne treatment should help you in your fight against bacteria. You will see clearer skin as your bacteria is being wiped out. Practising good hygiene and adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle should also help in the acne inflammation. Good luck!br
Acne is a very common skin disorder. It is a sad part of the lives of Millions of people in the USA and many more millions in other countries.

The good news in that acne is a very treatable disease. It is possible to reduce its appearance to the minimum, thus decreasing the scarring that in many cases appear in severe acne cases. It is however very important to discuss the myths that surround acne and address them the right way. This way we can avoid false treatment and unrealistic expectations.

Here is a list of 5 very common myths about acne and its causes:

Myth number 1: Acne is caused by diet. This is perhaps the most widely used myth. Lets make this clear right now. Hundreds of studies were conducted and not one of them proved that certain diet ingredients cause acne. not chocolate, not pizza, not French fries. However, one recent study shows a connection between milk consumption and appearance of acne. Another suggested linkage is between the consumption of high-glycemic foods and acne (soft drinks, sweets etc.). This also may explain the absence of acne in non-western countries. This link is not fully established, but is a good idea to reduce the consumption of such foods, anyway.

Myth number 2: Deficient personal hygiene. Acne is not caused by dirt. This is a common misconception because acne manifests as infection on the surface. the truth is that these infections origin deep beneath the surface, within the clogged pores of the skin It is advisable to clean the skin on a regular basis, but doing so will not prevent acne.

Myth number 3: Sex. So many myths surround sex, why not invent an acne-sex myth… It is believed that masturbation or celibacy may create acne. There is not scientific support to the claim.

Myth number 4: Acne is caused by stress. The ordinary stress of day-to-day living is not an important factor in acne. Severe stress that needs medical attention is sometimes treated with drugs that can cause acne as a side effect.

Myth number 5: You just have to let acne run its course. There is no reason in the world that you, or anyone else, should endure acne for a long time. Some acne cases leave scares.

After dispelling the myths and lies about acne, its time to take action and deal with it. It is very advisable to treat acne as it is a very treatable disorder.br

Statistics indicate that as high as 80% of the entire American population has ever had acne. Acne afflicts all genders, sexes and ages making it a universal skin disorder. As a form of skin disease, the good news is that acne is not transmittable.

Although acne is not contagious from person-to-person, it can spread to the whole face and can severely affect all the skin tissues that have pilosebaceous units. It is not true that acne just affects those going through puberty. Even infants or individuals who may be well over their forties, can develop this skin disorder. Acne infantilis is the term used for acne that grows on newborn babies, on the other hand acne rosacea is related to middle-aged people.

Acne has different classifications, according to the severity of the infection.

Comedo is the form where all severe acne cases originate. This is characterized by red swelling or small lesions on your skin. Whiteheads and blackheads are two forms of comedo. Conversely, blackhead is an open comedo. The coloration is due to the accumulation of dark skin pigments called melanin, plus hardened sebum and other skin debris and particles. This is the basic structure of whiteheads, however, the only difference is the coloration and these are deeply situated into the skin layers.

If you have sandpaper-like skin around the tissue of your mouth and on the surface of your forehead, chin and cheeks, you probably have papules. Pus-filled lesions are also termed as pustules.

Nodules on the other hand are similar with pustules. However, nodules are firmer and are larger acne growing deep in the skin. Inflammation may develop your pustules into containing semi-liquid or liquid materials composed of white blood cells (which are dead because of the acne-infecting bacteria named as Propionibacterium acnes), dead skin cells and active or inactive bacteria. This can result into more serious acne called cysts. In such situations, you may need the assistance of a skin dermatologist or physician.

What is the cause of acne? It is quite difficult to exactly determine what may have caused your acne infection as reasons differ case to case. Studies indicate that the skin disorder may be brought about by many factors, including poor diet, stress, weather elements, and hormone changes or may be genetically influenced.

Medically speaking, acne starts from the formation of hardened sebum, or the oily substance secreted to the skin through the sebaceous glands. This then will be permeated with acne-infecting bacteria, which in return will trigger the immune system to release white blood cells to obstruct the attack of the bacteria. As this happens, dead white blood cells and bacteria will accumulate in the hair follicles mixed with skin debris and dead skin particles, which then will inflame the lesions.

Most mild case acne may be treated with over the counter acne medications. They are generally topical drugs, which you apply on your skin for acne treatment. They may come in the form of soaps, lotions, gels and creams. Conversely, systematic acne medications are taken orally. The most common of which are the antibiotics.

Knowing that you are not the only one inflicted with acne at some point in life or another helps in that there will always be new research and new products coming on stream. Continue to read up on acne research and help your fight against it.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and is exposed to different kinds of diseases and microbial attacks. One of the most common diseases of the skin is acne.

When hair follicles on the skin secret a natural oil called sebum, this old travels to the pores of the skin to protect and lubricate. Some people have skin disorders where there is excess secretion of this natural oil. This phenomenon is also common among young people entering puberty where hormonal changes take place.

Excess sebum can clog the pores of the skin. Since this is a sticky substance, this could attract bacteria that touch the skin and form spots and inflammations that develop into acne.

The forms of actually are inflammatory and non-inflammatory. The smallest form which is also the start of acne is called microcomedo. This may develop into either blackhead or whitehead. Pustules and Nodules are similar to comedo but more serious. Pustules have pus-filled bumps and yellowish color. Nodules are inflammations under the skin and have larger size and firmer than the Pustules.

Papules are another form of acne that comes between inflammatory and non-inflammatory. They are the typical pimples which are mildly inflamed and do now show redness or contain pus. Acne Vulgaris is the most common type of acne and is composed of both blackheads and whiteheads. This is not very serious though can be easily treated with both over the counter and prescription medications.

Pinching or squeezing of small pus-filled acne could lead to cystic acne. This can result to pain brought about by deep rooted inflammation.

Acne Rosacea is common among middle aged adults. This type of acne is makes the nose red due to inflamed bumps. Most common infected areas are the chin and forehead. The face can also looked flushed giving the affected person an impression of being drunk. When in severe stage, Acne Rosacea can cause bulbous nose (rhinofima).

Some women get affected with perioral dermatitis wherein small pustules and papules form on the chin, around the mouth and sometimes near the forehead and eyelids. The cause for this may be attributed to fluorinated toothpaste and steroids, which is also the cause of corticosteroid acne.

Even babies are not spared from acne. Although rare, infantile acne can be present on new born babies. This is no reason to worry though because this kind of acne is very mild and may disappear after a few weeks. This may be caused by fetal hormones.

There is also a type of acne that develops in the scalp and is called scalp folliculitis. Lack of hygienic practice in the scalp area and oily type of hair can accumulate bacteria to form acne. This type of acne can be treated with acne-fighting shampoos.

Acne conglobata is a severe form of nodular cystic acne vulgaris that extensively affects the face, chest and back. Multiple inflamed and non-inflamed nodules and scars are found in many parts of the body. A severe form of acne conglobata is the very rare Acne fulminan. This is very common among men.

Acne normally hits your kids at the worst possible time – when they’re just becoming teenagers. This is time when you want to go out the most and impress members of the opposite sex with your looks. This can be far more difficult if you have acne, and it causes many teenagers to suffer from depression, and isolate themselves from the rest of society. These kids can then, quite literally, miss the best years of their lives because of an annoying skin condition.

As most of you are aware the most common sign of acne is that you’ll get an array of pimples spread across your face. The face isn’t the only area that can be affected by acne – lots of people get it on their chest, neck and shoulders and sometimes even on their legs. Personally my own ace was far worse on my chest and shoulders than it ever was on my face so I was kinda lucky in that regard.

Acne Awareness
Parents need to be very aware of just how much upset acne can cause a teenager. We grow old quickly and forget the amount of frustration and pain that having a serious bout of acne can cause when you’re just a young kid. Teenagers can be difficult to talk to but just a simple reminder that this is just a passing phase and that their skin will clear. What you want to do is get the message into the heads that “acne is just a phase…these things too will pass.”

Self Worth Issues
One of the biggest downsides to having acne is that teenagers can feel “worthless” because their skin is so badly marked. Again this is where parents need to step in and remind their kids that this is totally wrong. Perception is reality and helping your child change their perception of acne will help change their perception of the world around them. Remind your kids that acne does not define who they are as a person or how valuable they are to their friends or the world at large.

Have them write up a list of all the things they love about their life or themselves and then use it as a kind of balance sheet against their acne problem. Sometimes we need to see the truth before we can believe it.

Speak To An Expert
If all the reassurance in the world fails to convince your son or daughter that acne is not the end of the world then maybe it’s time to go find a good dermatologist.
