As someone who struggled with acne growing up it was very distressing to see it follow me into my grown up years. While some people grow out of it others cannot shift those blemishes and acne breakouts permanently.

I was able to clear my skin but it was not through the use of any over the counter products promising miracle cures. Instead it was by following a very simple routine which tackled the causes of acne.

These causes include bacteria, oily skin, hormonal imbalance, clogged pores, poor diet and others. So while the over the counter treatments can be effective in the short term they rarely actually solve the problem for good.

In order to really clear up your skin you should start with these basics.

- Stick to a good diet. Stay away from heavily processed foods and greasy junk food. Replace sugary foods with fruit and vegetables where possible.

- Drink lots of water. The recommended amount is 8 glasses per day so set yourself this goal to reach. This will flush your body out and in many cases can be all you need to get clearer skin.

- Do not touch your face or pop your zits. This is difficult to avoid but it is important as you will only spread the germs around your face and lead to more blemishes. Also you may have bacteria on your fingers and actually make the problem even worse.

- If you use any products on your face such as make-up or sun creams then look for ones that are right for sensitive skin. These will be better for you than more oil based examples.

These are just some basic tips to get you started. They should help to bring out some improvements and if you can stay away from over the counter products and follow a natural treatment you can actually clear the problem permanently.
