Can Creatine Actually Cause Acne?

Creatine is a sports supplement used to improve sports performance and energy levels. It allows athletes to significantly improve the amount of training they can do in a given session. But many people who use creatine can sometimes notice an increase in the level of acne on their face or back. Acne breakouts may suddenly appear out on nowhere and this can cause significant embarrassment and distress. Acne is an unsightly condition that can reduce peoples self confidence and self esteem, so it is important to realise the cause and find out if the use of creatine can actually cause acne or if it is somthing else.

Creatine is produced naturally in the body and plays a key role in respiration and providing energy to the muscles. Creatine supplements are an entirely legal way of increasing the level of this substance in the body. But supplementing with additional creatine does have some side effects that if they are not properly dealt with can contribute to acne. The recommended way to take creatine supplements is to mix the powder with fruit juice. Now this is harmless in itself but if you are susceptible to acne it can cause a problem. By drinking extra high sugar fruit juices you cause your blood sugar level to rise which can trigger an insulin spike. The resulting increase in hormone production can had a significant effect on acne breakouts. Another side effect is that creatine causes you to dehydrate, which can cause acne. Creatine takes a lot of water from the blood, therefore away from the skin, into the muscles for use in energy conversion. By dehydrating the skin you reduce its ability to flush harmful acne causing toxins, bacteria and oil away and so the pores are more likely to become blocked and inflamed. The way to counter both of the above side effects is simply to increase the amount of water you consume in a day. Although it can taste nasty, try and consume your creatine with water, eat some other carbohydrates at the same time to help with absorption if necessary. Make sure to drink loads of water to keep your skin hydrated throughout the day as well. To combat the acne you should make sure to use an acne cleansing regime every day.

All in all creatine doesnt actually cause acne, but if you dont drink enough water and consume to much high sugar fruit juices it can have an indirect effect on your acne breakouts.
